The first German Language Enrichment Program Starts in September at P.S. 18 (Brooklyn)

When I met Sylvia Wellhöfer, a German mother living in Brooklyn, a few years ago, she had just learned about the newly opened French dual-language program at PS110 in Greenpoint (Brooklyn), and was interested in bringing the first German dual language program to a New York City public school.

She started the German Language Program initiative in the summer of 2015 and, thanks to all of her group’s efforts, the first German Language Enrichment Program will finally begin with Kindergarten this September at P.S. 18 – Edward Bush in Williamsburg (Brooklyn).

Her story, and the one of the German Language Program initiative, is part of my new book The Bilingual Revolution: The Future of Education is in Two Languages (TBR Books, Sept 5, 2017). Ihre Zeit im Mutterschutz wollte Sylvia Wellhöfer sinnvoll nutzen und sich gemeinnützig engagieren. Deshalb gründete sie das German Language Program, eine Eltern-Initiative mit dem Ziel, kostenlosen bilingualen Sprachunterricht an öffentlichen Schulen in New York anzubieten. Motiviert durch die Erfolge der französischen Organisationen, die bereits viele Schulen in New York mit ihrer Sprache bereichert haben, startete sie ihr Projekt gemeinsam mit anderen engagierten Eltern im Sommer 2015. Das wichtigste Etappen-Ziel ist jetzt erreicht: Ab September 2017 startet das erste „German Enrichment Program“ an der Grundschule P.S. 18 in Brooklyn. Für Sylvia genau der richtige Zeitpunkt, um die Leitung der Initiative an Nina Zieling abzugeben. Sie ist ebenfalls Mutter und weiß, was es bedeutet mehrere Sprachen fließend zu sprechen: Sie selbst ist trilingual mit Deutsch, Englisch und Spanisch. Im Interview erzählen Nina und Sylvia, was es mit dem „German Enrichment Program“ auf sich hat, für wen es geeignet ist und wie man sich anmelden kann.
