Book Tour in Washington DC on October 20th, 21st and 22nd

Mark your calendar! I will be joining DC Language Immersion Program in Washington DC on October 20th, 21st and 22nd for a series of multilingual series of family-friendly events held in schools, book stores, art centers, playgrounds and private homes in every ward of the District!

It will be the occasion to speak about my new book The Bilingual Revolution: The Future of Education is in Two Languages” (TBR Books, 2017) and share the successes and challenges of New York City’s communities in their quest for dual language programs.

Hören Sie hier, die von der ARD produzierte Reportage über den ersten kostenlosen deutschen Sprachunterricht an einer öffentlichen Grundschule in New York.

Alle Erstklässler, die in diesem Jahr an der P.S 18 in Brooklyn mit „Kindergarten“ im Alter von ca. fünf Jahren eingeschult wurden, nehmen an einem spanischen Dual-Language-Programm teil, welches durch Deutschunterricht ergänzt wird. I was recently interviewed by François Grosjean, world-renowned psycholinguist and expert on bilingualism who also writes for Psychology Today. In 2015, I had the pleasure of hosting a talk with Professor Grosjean in New York during which we discussed what life as a bilingual was about. So it is especially fitting that we join you and the Embassy of France in announcing an education fund that will support Francophone communities in their quest to ensure that their children become and remain bilingual, and that in so doing, the gift of bilingualism is spread to others.

President Macron launched French Dual Language Fund in New York

What a day! Who would have thought 10 years ago that this day would come. Last Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated our French Dual Language Fund at the CUNY Graduate Center on Fifth Avenue in front of a large crowd of educators, parents, and supporters. His words in favor of bilingual education and the bridges that we create when we know more than one language resonated with all of us. France’s First Lady Visited P.S. 84 and We All Loved Her!

Last Wednesday, we hosted First Lady of France, Brigitte Macron, and French Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, for a visit of P.S.84 in Manhattan. The school offers a dual-language program in French as well as one in Spanish. Principal Evelyn Lolis, her staff, teachers and students, as well as the parents, worked tirelessly to make this moment unfold with perfection. The result was an exceptional, intensely emotional experience which I will never forget. Mrs. Macron’s gentle heart, her kind words, and her interaction with the children (she is a former teacher) touched us profoundly.

The First German Dual Language Program Featured on German Radio!

Dear German speakers, you can now listen to the broadcast of the German radio program, ARD, on the so-called “trilingual project” at P.S. 18 in Brooklyn.

Starting with Kindergarten this September, the school’s Spanish Dual Language Program is now enriched with German! The German language education is provided by the Goethe Institut New York.

Book Party at The Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn

Back In Brooklyn where everything began! It was here that, 10 years ago, the first French dual language program was launched at P.S. 58. Many programs followed after that in French, Russian, Japanese, German, Italian, Chinese, Polish, Arabic. More programs and languages will be added in the years to come, I’m sure of that. I wanted the book to be directed towards parents, with the goal of providing accessible knowledge, guidance, and encouragement as they consider implementing a dual-language program in their community or school. In that spirit, the book provides a roadmap for parents willing to embark on such an initiative, along with suggested steps to follow, examples, and testimonies from parents and educators who have chosen a similar path.
