[DE] Kostenloser Zusatzunterricht “Deutsch”, ab September 2017 an der öffentlichen Grundschule P.S. 18 (Brooklyn)

Als ich Sylvia Wellhöfer, eine deutsche Mutter, die in Brooklyn wohnt, zum ersten Mal traf, hatte sie gerade von dem etablierten französischen Dual-Language-Programm an der P.S. 110 (Greenpoint, Brooklyn) erfahren. Sie war überzeugt von der Methode und gründete im Sommer 2015 eine Eltern-Initiative mit dem Ziel das erste kostenlose deutsch/englische Dual-Language-Programm an der Ostküste zu formieren.

Dank der Bemühungen vieler Eltern und institutioneller Partner, wird das bestehende spanisch/englische Dual-Language-Programm an der P.S. 18 (Williamsburg, Brooklyn) ab September 2017 um deutschen Sprachunterricht erweitert. Alle Kinder, die mit Kindergarten (Geburtsjahr 2012) anfangen, haben die Möglichkeit dreisprachig ausgebildet zu werden.

The first German Language Enrichment Program Starts in September at P.S. 18 (Brooklyn)

When I met Sylvia Wellhöfer, a German mother living in Brooklyn, a few years ago, she had just learned about the newly opened French dual-language program at PS110 in Greenpoint (Brooklyn), and was interested in bringing the first German dual language program to a New York City public school.

She started the German Language Program initiative in the summer of 2015 and, thanks to all of her group’s efforts, the first German Language Enrichment Program will finally begin with Kindergarten this September at P.S. 18 – Edward Bush in Williamsburg (Brooklyn).

[FR] L’éducation bilingue : la volte-face des parents et des communautés par Ofelia García – Avant-propos de La Révolution bilingue de Fabrice Jaumont

Ce livre [La Révolution bilingue] apporte une contribution des plus importantes en se concentrant sur un sujet souvent absent, celui du rôle primordial que jouent les parents de divers milieux ethnolinguistiques dans le façonnement de l’éducation de leurs enfants aux États-Unis. Les livres sur l’éducation bilingue sont souvent destinés aux enseignants, et très peu se sont intéressés à ce que les familles pouvaient faire pour s’assurer que les écoles publiques américaines développent des filières d’éducation bilingue pour leurs enfants. L’histoire la plus importante que raconte le livre de Fabrice Jaumont est ce désir des familles américaines de voir leurs enfants apprendre en deux langues, en anglais mais aussi dans une langue à laquelle ils se sentent particulièrement liés. Contrairement à ce que pense l’opinion publique, les familles américaines de diverses origines ethnolinguistiques sont prêtes à développer des programmes d’éducation bilingue pour leurs enfants. Bilingual Education: Making a U-Turn with Parents and Communities by Ofelia García – Foreword to The Bilingual Revolution by Fabrice Jaumont

This book [The Bilingual Revolution] makes a most important contribution because it focuses on a topic that is often absent––that of the important role that parents of different ethnolinguistic backgrounds have in shaping an appropriate education for their children in the United States. Usually books on bilingual education are for teachers and little attention has been previously paid to how families can act to ensure that American public schools develop bilingual education programs for their children. The most important story told by Fabrice Jaumont in this book is that of the desire of American families to have their children schooled bilingually, in English, but also in a language that has deep connections to them. Contrary to popular opinion, American families with different ethnolinguistic backgrounds are interested in developing bilingual education programs for their children. My talk “Why learning languages matters” at the Alliance Française of Greenwich

I was invited by the Alliance Francaise of Greenwich, CT to talk about the importance of being multi-lingual and my research about the bilingual revolution. I was able to explain why I learned English and how important it became for me in my career, thanks to a great teacher in the 6th grade who was able to share his passion for the English language.

I also had the chance to distribute awards and prizes to Greenwich high school students who excel in French. Presentation of Unequal Partners at the 2017 Annual Global Affairs Conference of Rutgers University

I was invited to speak at the 2017 Global Affairs Conference organized by the Rutgers Division of Global Affairs (DGA) and The Student Association of Global Affairs (SAGA) in Newark, NJ on April 21. The theme was “Dynamics of Global Inequality: New Thinking in Global Affairs.” I presented my work and my book Unequal Partners in the panel “Tracing the Roots of Oppression,”  alongside Professor Taja Nia Henderson (Rutgers Law School), Dr. Miloš Hrnjaz (University of Belgrade), and Tyler Huether (Embry-Riddle).

I created powerpoints based on my book Unequal Partners: American Foundations and Higher Education Development in Africa (Palgrave, 2016) to use in classrooms (copyright Fabrice Jaumont).

The book Unequal Partners:

  • Offers a flesh and bone approach to international development for a wide audience, including international organizations, governmental agencies and NGOs involved in international assistance
  • Provides insights into building the educational capital of developing countries
  • Analyzes the role of American philanthropy abroad and its impact on higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa
