Arabic Language Learning in Europe: Realities of Policy & Practice (Brussels)

I was thrilled to participate in the symposium on Arabic Language Learning in Europe: Realities of Policy & Practice, which took place in Brussels on May 8-9. As a language enthusiast, I have always been interested in the importance of language learning in education policies. I believe that the recognition of Arabic as the fifth most spoken language in the world is a significant development that warrants attention from language educators and policymakers.

Upcoming Talk: Eshraqat Festival – Abu Dhabi – Nov. 9

Looking forward to this talk in Abu Dhabi as part as the Eshraqat Festival organized by the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence. The festival’s objective is to promote the notion that tolerance is knowledge, and that the values of tolerance represented in knowing others, dialogue and respect while accepting pluralism, diversity, peace and other human values that celebrate and promote coexistence, become possible through knowledge. This mission resonates well with me and my books on bilingualism and dual-language education in particular which I see as a way of building bridges between communities.

Ellen Bialystok est l’une des spécialistes mondiales de la recherche sur les effets cognitifs du bilinguisme. Autrement dit, elle sait tout sur le cerveau bilingue.

Elle est mon invitée pour ce nouvel épisode de Révolution Bilingue et nous explique qu’un cerveau bilingue est un cerveau actif et en meilleure santé, surtout avec l’âge. Ses recherches ont par ailleurs démontré que le bilinguisme est un outil puissant pour lutter contre la démence et même la maladie d’Alzheimer chez les patients plus âgés.

Si le français revit ces dernières années en Louisiane, on le doit notamment à Joseph Dunn, qui se bat depuis des années, avec d’autres, pour le bilinguisme et la défense du français. Lorsque la Louisiane est entrée dans l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie l’an dernier, “mon rêve est devenu réalité” dit-il.

[DE] Buchvorstellung von Die bilinguale Revolution am Goethe-Institut

Anfang Januar habe ich am Goethe-Institut in New York die deutsche Version von The Bilingual Revolution vorgestellt, Die bilinguale revolution, Zweisprachigkeit und die Zukunft der Bildung. Da die meisten Eltern in New York ihre Kinder in den Kindergartenklassen anmeldeten, bot es sich an, über das deutsche zweisprachige Programm an der P.S. 18 Edward Bush in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) zu sprechen. Der Nettoerlös des Abends wurde an das aufstrebende zweisprachige Programm der Schule gespendet.
