China: Rise of a New Philanthropic Power

In response to the ongoing coronavirus emergency, on January 31, Chinese billionaire Jack Ma pledged the equivalent of US$144 million for medical supplies for Wuhan and Hubei as well as $14 million to help develop a vaccine. Just a few months ago, the former teacher had left the reins of a company of more than 100,000 employees, valued $450 billion, stating that he wanted to devote himself to philanthropy in the field of education. The emergence of the coronavirus threat showed his commitment to supporting public-health efforts as well.

French-speaking population according to the US Census Bureau

The latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey reports that 1,203,941 people in the U.S. speak French at home.This includes speakers of French Patois and Cajun. These individuals are over 5 years old (count another 4.6% if you want to include children under 5, or 55,380 children). Despite a drop since my last count, French is still the fifth most common non-English language spoken in U.S. households, after Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog.

The James W. Dodge Foreign Language Advocate Award

I am honored beyond words to be the next recipient of The James W. Dodge Foreign Language Advocate Award from NECTFL, and to be the first French national to receive this prestigious prize. Past recipients include the Hon. Paul Simon, President Jimmy Carter, the Hon. J. William Fulbright, Sesame Street, blues musician Taj Mahal, and journalist Diane Rehm. The addition of my name to this list gives me immeasurable pride. The ceremony will be on February 14, 2020 during the NECTL conference in New York.

Bilingual Education Colloquium in Dakar

I was at the Musée des civilisations noires in Dakar for a colloquium on bilingualism and bilingual education organized by Laurent Bonardi and Ecole Actuelle Bilingue. Ranka Bijeljac-Babic, Thierry Nazzi, Aliou Seck, and I brought different perspectives on the advantage and importance of bilingual education and bilingualism in our societies, and their potential for cognitive, cultural, and economic development.
