Exploring Bilingualism and Education during the Paris Book Fair

Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in a couple of stimulating discussions on bilingualism and education with two experts in the field, Ellen Bialystok and Hélène Léone. The conversation took place during the Festival du Livre of Paris (21-23 April 2023) and at the beautiful Salons of the Mairie in the 16th arrondissement (20 April 2023).

“Révolution Bilingue”, le podcast mensuel produit par French Morning, s’intéresse ce mois-ci au cerveau. Depuis une dizaine d’années, les recherches sur les effets du bilinguisme sur notre lobe frontal ont beaucoup progressé.

Je reçois, sur le sujet, Ana-Inès Ansaldo, qui non seulement parle cinq langues, mais est aussi et surtout une des chercheuses les plus réputées sur cette question. Dans son laboratoire de l’Université de Montréal elle a notamment montré que les bilingues résistent mieux au vieillissement que les monolingues.

[video] Conference “My Culture, Your Culture: International Education for Success in the 21st Century”

How do you identify yourself? Are you American? French? Mexican? Latino? African? Haitian? Canadian? Quebecois? As the world becomes increasingly integrated and interconnected, cultural identity has taken on new meaning and importance. The ability to understand our own culture and the cultural heritage of others is essential for our shared humanity. It is also a powerful asset in a world that is increasingly more interconnected and competitive.

On Saturday, April 12, we examined these topics at the Lycée Français de New York with leading educators, policy makers, entrepreneurs and practitioners from around the world. The conference “My Culture, Your Culture: International Education for Success in the 21st Century” explored cultural identity and diversity, and how best to prepare our students for success in the future. Dans cette classe de maternelle de P.S. 110 – The Monitor School, une école primaire de Brooklyn, les enfants suivent un enseignement bilingue, avec des classes autant en français qu’en anglais. Laura Sutton, l’enseignante, leur apprend à lire et à compter en français le matin et en anglais l’après-midi. Les deux tiers de ces enfants, qui ont entre 5 et 6 ans, sont des petits Américains anglophones, les autres sont d’origine francophone. Continue reading

What’s the best age to start and master a new language? Are bilingual students smarter? Does knowing two languages offer advantages in learning how to read, write and do math? Does being bilingual have an impact on our personal and emotional development? These themes, and many more, were addressed during the daylong conference, Living with Two Languages: the Advantages of Being Bilingual, at the Lycée Français de New York on Saturday, April 13. Experts from the United States, France and Canada, including renowned researchers, Ofelia García and Ellen Bialystok, author Karen Le Billon, and chef Eric Ripert, explored bilingualism from the perspectives of education, sociology, psychology and gastronomy.
