Unequal Partners Reviewed in the Philanthropy & Education Journal

Kyle A. Long wrote a great review of my book, Unequal Partners: American Foundations and Higher Education Development in Africa in the recently-launched journal, Philanthropy & Education, put together by Professor Noah Drezner of Columbia University, Indiana University Press and Teachers College. Here is an extract of the review. You can subscribe to the journal by visiting  this webpage.

Jaumont leverages a monumentally large dataset to provide a rare insider’s perspective of U.S. foundations’ efforts to transform higher education in Africa at the dawn of the 21st century.

Jaumont largely succeeds in the difficult task he sets for himself […] bypassing the well-trod debate about the hegemonic roles of large U.S. foundations while still acknowledging the asymmetries of power and manipulative discourses they produce to emphasize instead the complexity of the grantor-grantee relationship.
